Lavender, otherwise known as lavandula, is a flowering plant from the mint family. There are over 40 known species of lavender and it has been used since ancient Egyptian times. It’s used as an ornamental plant, as an herb, and also for the extraction of essential oils. The word lavender is thought to be derived from the Latin lavare “to wash”, referring to the use of infusions.
