Hemp History Week 6/5 – 6/11 – Ocean Ranch Organics

Hemp History Week 6/5 – 6/11

Hemp Seeds in a bowl for Hemp History Week

It’s hemp history week!

We have used hemp seeds in our recipe since the beginning of Ocean Ranch. Hemp seeds have amazing benefits, but also have a tumultuous history in the US.

Hemp was first found back in 8000 BC in what is now China and Taiwan. It is believed to be one of the first agricultural crops. In 1606, hemp was first introduced to North America. Farmers grew hemp for paper, lamp fuel, and rope. Even George Washington grew it!

In the early 1900’s, the attitude towards hemp changed. Hemp started being heavily taxed because of the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 and later was grouped with cannabis during the US Government’s war on drugs. In 2004, after 30 years of being illegal, the U.S. started allowing businesses to import dietary hemp products and was then fully legalized in 2018.

Hemp seeds, which are technically a nut, are highly nutritious. They are rich in omega-6 and omega-3 acids as well as protein. They are one of the few plants that are a complete protein source and are also known to help eczema. Studies have also shown that hemp seeds and hemp seed oil may help reduce blood pressure, decrease blood clots, and help the heart heal after a heart attack.

Hemp seeds are truly a superfood and they add an extra crunch to our products!
